Whisper Pricing (2026)

The weights are, and running it is not. Whisper is open-weights, so there is no licence fee, but you pay for the compute that runs it. Commercial streaming vendors publish $0.0065 to $0.0077 a minute, and below moderate volume a managed service usually costs less than the engineering time to operate your own.

Not without a wrapper somebody else maintains. Whisper was not built for streaming, and a voice agent needs partial results as the caller speaks. By the time you have added streaming, turn detection and reconnection, the commercial vendors are generally cheaper than the engineer maintaining it.

Deepgram for anything real-time. Its published streaming list is $0.0077 a minute and it handles turn detection, which is the part a voice agent breaks without. Whisper is the right choice for batch transcription of recorded files where latency does not matter and volume is high enough that owning the compute pays.

We do not publish an accuracy comparison because we have not measured word error rate, and every published benchmark we found was run by a vendor with a stake in the result. What we do verify is price, and on price the spread is large and checkable.

Roughly a sixth. At published list rates, recognition is about $0.0077 of a $0.0465 component floor. Synthesis is the line with real range, running from about $0.014 to $0.085 a minute depending on the voice, which moves a bill further than any other single choice.
