Look elsewhere if

A framework, not a product. There is no flow editor and no non-technical path. This is a codebase you maintain.

Questions people actually ask

Is LiveKit Agents a product I can buy, or a framework I have to build on?
A framework. There is no flow editor and no non-technical path, so a team without engineers cannot deploy it. The transport underneath is what a large share of this category already uses, which is the reason to be here: you are adopting the infrastructure directly instead of paying a platform to wrap it.
What does LiveKit actually cost per minute?
$0.01 a minute for the hosted transport, read 2026-08-07, with a free tier and self-serve signup. That is transport only. Speech recognition, the model and synthesis are yours to buy separately, so the realistic floor once those are added is around $0.0465 a minute at published list rates.
Is LiveKit cheaper than Vapi or Retell?
On the component you can compare, yes, and the comparison is misleading. LiveKit charges $0.01 for transport where a platform charges $0.05 to $0.11 for orchestration plus components. The platform fee buys turn-taking and interruption handling that took years to tune. You are choosing between paying a fee and paying an engineer.
When does building on LiveKit stop making sense?
When your team cannot maintain it. The framework hands you turn detection, barge-in and reconnection as your problems. If nobody on the team wants to own those, the platform fee is cheaper than the engineering time, and the honest version of that arithmetic includes salary.
Can I run it myself instead of using the hosted service?
Yes, it is open source, and that is the main reason teams pick it. Self-hosting removes the $0.01 transport line and replaces it with infrastructure you operate. Whether that is cheaper depends entirely on what your time is worth, which is the calculation nobody publishes.
