Fireflies.ai in Depth

Every Fireflies plan, the free one included, advertises Unlimited AI summaries. Two lines below it on the same card sits 20 AI credits.

Both statements are true. The distance between them is the product.

What a credit buys, and where its price is published

Fireflies is unusually clear on what credits are not. Its knowledge base opens with a warning that transcription is not charged in AI credits, and that standard meeting transcription, note-taking and recap emails are covered by the plan. The unlimited summary claim holds for the summary everybody gets.

Credits pay for the rest: AI Skills, which is the library of 100+ templates including BANT and MEDDIC; custom summary sections; Voice Agents; Sales Assist; Autofill CRM into HubSpot and Salesforce; AskFred during a live call; and the Daily Digest and Meeting Prep bundle. Templates inside a summary are free, custom sections are not, and reprocessing a summary is free.

The rate card for buying more sits in that knowledge-base article. It is not on the pricing page.

Credits per monthPricePer credit
50$5$0.100
200$20$0.100
1,000$90$0.090
2,500$200$0.080
5,000$375$0.075
7,500$450$0.060
10,000$600$0.060

That is a real volume discount, which this site does not often get to say. The unit price falls 40% across a 200-fold range and falls monotonically the whole way. Lusha's ladder, audited here in the same category of purchase, bought about fifteen percent across sixteen-fold volume and was not even monotonic.

The allowance is granted once

The same article states it in a single line: every Fireflies account includes one-time AI credits based on your plan. Free 20, Pro 20, Business 30, Enterprise 50.

Read that against where the number appears on the pricing page, wedged into a bullet list between Unlimited transcription and Unlimited AI summaries, two entitlements that plainly recur every month. Nothing on the card marks the credits as different. They are the only line in that list that never comes back.

Two further clauses compound it. Credits are shared within your team and do not increase with added teammates, so headcount buys none. And upgrading replaces rather than stacks: the article's own example is that moving from Free to Business gives you 30 credits, not 50.

Computed from Fireflies' own two published numbers, not measured. Each plan's credit grant valued at $0.10, the cheapest rate on Fireflies' own add-on card. Plan prices are the monthly-billing rates from the pricing page, read 2026-08-08. The vendor publishes both figures and never multiplies them.
PlanCredits (one-time)Worth at Fireflies' own ratePlan price
Free20$2.00$0
Pro20$2.00$18 / seat / mo
Business30$3.00$29 / seat / mo
Enterprise50$5.00$39 / seat / mo, annual only

Three things fall out of that table. Free and Pro grant the same twenty credits, so the first $18 a month buys none. Enterprise at $39 a seat includes precisely the pack Fireflies sells to anybody for $5. And because the grant is per account rather than per seat, a fifty-person Business team shares thirty credits between them — 0.6 credits a head, once.

Paid accounts do not stop when the grant is gone. Fireflies automatically subscribes them to the lowest credit tier, $5 for 50 a month, which the article frames as avoiding interruption and which is also an auto-enrolment into a recurring charge. Free users hit a paywall instead. Purchased credits auto-renew monthly unless paused, and unused ones do not carry over.

How far a credit goes is the part nobody can compute. Charging is per query and dynamic, with the article saying the number of credits used depends on the complexity and effort required to generate the output. No worked example appears anywhere. The price of a credit is published to three decimal places; the number of credits a BANT summary costs is not published at all.

The caps underneath the word unlimited

Storage is 400 minutes on Free and 8,000 on Pro, but the free figure is per team and the paid one is per seat. The unit changes at the paywall, so the real jump is larger than twenty-fold for any team of more than one, and a five-person free team shares about thirteen half-hour calls of retention between them.

Unlimited transcription also has a per-meeting ceiling: two hours on Free and Pro, three on Business, four on Enterprise. Unlimited counts the meetings, not the minutes inside one. The annual badge, unusually for this directory, survives checking: save up to 44% is exactly right for Pro, Business saves 34.5%, and Enterprise is annual-only.

Setting Fireflies.ai Up

Connect a calendar and the bot joins. There is a route in without one, and the free tier needs no card. Getting value out is the slower half, because the AI features that differentiate it are the credit-metered ones.

  • Check your credit balance on day one, not day thirty. The grant is one-time and shared across the whole team.
  • Pause credit auto-upgrades if you do not want a $5 monthly subscription to start itself when the grant runs out.
  • Count seats against storage. Free is 400 minutes for the whole team; Pro is 8,000 per seat. The unit changes, not just the number.
  • Check your longest recurring meeting against the two-hour per-meeting cap on Free and Pro.
  • Upgrade in one step if you are going to upgrade, because credits replace rather than stack — Free to Business gives 30, not 50.
  • Enterprise is annual-only, so there is no monthly path onto HIPAA compliance, private storage or custom retention.

Strengths and Weaknesses

What Works
  • The credit rate card is published at all, with seven price points and a genuine 40% volume discount — more disclosure than most vendors in this directory manage.
  • Transcription is explicitly excluded from the meter, stated in a callout rather than buried, so the unlimited summary claim is honest for the standard summary.
  • Reprocessing a summary is free and templates inside summaries do not consume credits, which are the two places a meter would hurt most.
  • The annual discount claim survives checking, at 44.4% on Pro against a badge saying up to 44%.
  • Free tier is unlimited on transcription and summaries rather than capped at a meeting count, which is rare at $0.
What Does Not
  • The credits are one-time and the pricing page does not say so, listing them beside two entitlements that recur monthly.
  • They are per account, not per seat. A fifty-person Business team shares thirty credits, and adding people adds none.
  • Consumption is dynamic and unpublished, so no buyer can work out how far a grant goes before spending it.
  • Running out auto-subscribes paid accounts to a recurring $5 charge rather than stopping.
  • Free storage is 400 minutes for the entire team, and the unit silently becomes per-seat on Pro.
  • "Unlimited transcription" caps a single meeting at two hours on Free and Pro.
  • Enterprise has no monthly option, so compliance features are annual-commitment only.

Four tiers: Free, Pro at $18 a seat monthly, Business at $29 and Enterprise at $39 with no monthly alternative. Annual billing takes Pro to $10 and Business to $19. This site records the monthly rates, which is the basis a buyer can pay without committing a year.

The ladder sells three different things at three different points, and only one of them is AI. Free to Pro buys storage and video recording. Pro to Business buys conversation intelligence, unlimited storage and team analytics. Business to Enterprise buys compliance — HIPAA, SSO and SCIM, audit logs, private storage, custom retention.

AI credits move 20, 20, 30, 50 across that whole range. The feature the category is named for is the one line on the card that barely scales, and it is the one line that never renews.

The Verdict

4.1

A strong transcription archive with a published, genuinely discounted credit rate card — undermined by a pricing page that presents a one-time, team-wide credit grant as though it were a monthly per-seat allowance.

Buy it if
  • You want a searchable archive of every conversation and will mostly use the standard summary, which is not metered.
  • You have worked out your credit consumption and are willing to buy packs, where the volume curve is real.
  • You need CRM autofill or Voice Agents enough to budget for them as a separate line.
  • Storage matters more to you than AI features, and you are on Business or above where it is unlimited.
Skip it if
  • You are sizing a team on the assumption that credits arrive monthly or scale with headcount.
  • You need to forecast AI cost, which dynamic per-query charging makes impossible in advance.
  • You record meetings longer than two hours and are staying on Free or Pro.
  • You need HIPAA, SSO or custom retention without signing an annual contract.

Questions people actually ask

Is Fireflies AI worth it?
For transcription and search, the free and Pro tiers are competitively priced and the standard summary is genuinely unmetered. The judgement turns on the AI features, which run on credits granted once rather than monthly, shared across the whole team rather than per seat, and consumed at a per-query rate Fireflies does not publish. Budget those as a separate subscription and the answer is usually yes; assume they are included and the answer changes.
Is Fireflies AI completely free?
The free tier is real and needs no card. It gives unlimited transcription and unlimited standard AI summaries, and caps three things: storage at 400 minutes across the entire team, any single meeting at two hours, and AI credits at a one-time grant of 20 for the whole account. Video recording is not included at all.
Is there a free alternative to fireflies AI?
Fathom's free tier is unlimited on recordings, transcription and storage with no time window, which is more generous than Fireflies on retention. It is less generous on comprehension: its advanced summaries and AI assistant are both marked "Limited use" with no number published. The two products meter opposite halves of the same job.
How expensive is Firefly?
Fireflies.ai runs $0, $18, $29 and $39 a seat a month on monthly billing, falling to $10 and $19 on Pro and Business annually; Enterprise is annual-only. Add AI credits on top if you use the advanced features — $5 for 50 through to $600 for 10,000 a month, which works out at $0.10 down to $0.06 a credit. Note the name collision: Adobe Firefly is an unrelated product and ranks on this query.
What are Fireflies AI credits?
They are the meter behind everything Fireflies markets as AI beyond the standard summary — AI Skills templates such as BANT and MEDDIC, custom summary sections, Voice Agents, Sales Assist, Autofill CRM and AskFred during a live call. Transcription and the standard summary are explicitly not charged against them. Three details are published in the knowledge base rather than on the pricing page: the grant is one-time rather than monthly, it is shared across the account rather than per seat, and consumption is per query and dynamic, so no buyer can work out in advance how far it goes.
Is Fireflies AI safe?
SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance are stated across the plans. The controls a security review usually asks for — HIPAA compliance, SSO and SCIM, audit logs via API, private storage and custom data retention — are Enterprise features, and Enterprise is sold annual-only at $39 a seat, so there is no monthly route onto any of them. Worth noting separately that AI features send meeting content through Fireflies' own AI layer on a per-query basis, which is a different data path from transcription and worth raising in a review.
