Fathom Review (2026)
Unlimited free recording and transcription, with the AI summaries metered by a limit Fathom does not publish anywhere.
Fathom in Depth
Fathom's free plan records without limit, and the pricing page says so four separate times: recordings unlimited, transcription unlimited, call downloads and clips unlimited, storage unlimited. It is not a trial and not a fourteen-day window. This is the most generous capture tier in the category and it is why the product spread through sales teams without a procurement conversation.
The same page marks four other rows Limited use. Advanced summaries. Ask Fathom within a single call. Account-wide Ask Fathom. Zapier and Make integrations.
None of the four carries a number.
The meter with no number on it
Advanced summaries are the reason a sales team pays for a notetaker. They are the seventeen templates Fathom names in its help centre — Enhanced, Sales, SANDLER, SPICED, MEDDPICC, BANT, Q&A, Demo, Customer Success, REACH, One-on-One, Project Update, Project Kick-Off, Candidate Interview, Retrospective and the rest. A chronological recap of a discovery call is a transcript with paragraph breaks; a BANT summary is the thing you actually wanted.
The help centre article that documents them, Advanced AI Features in Team Edition, lists all seventeen by name and describes what each produces. It does not say how many you get either.
So the shape of the free plan is that capture is unlimited and free, and comprehension is metered by a figure Fathom does not publish anywhere we could find it. Recording the call costs nothing. Getting a BANT summary out of it draws down an allowance whose size you discover by exhausting it.
The annual badge is true on one tier of three
The billing toggle is labelled Annually (save 25%+). Both prices are printed on every card, so the claim is checkable without a calculator, and it does not survive the check.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Actual saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium (individual) | $20 | $16 | 20.0% |
| Team | $19 | $15 | 21.1% |
| Business | $34 | $25 | 26.5% |
Business clears the bar. Premium and Team do not, and Premium misses it by a fifth of the claimed discount. The badge is not wildly wrong and that is rather the point: it is close enough that nobody divides, and the two tiers most individual buyers land on are the two that fall short.
What cancelling does to the recordings
No page ranking for this query covers it. Fathom's help centre does, and plainly.
A team account goes inactive three ways: the free trial ends, a payment fails and the account is cancelled automatically, or the team asks to cancel. In all three, the Team Calls tab stops working, and the article is explicit that you will not be able to access team-wide recordings or insights until the account is restored.
The recordings are not deleted. They are held, and access to them was the thing you were paying for. The unlimited free storage that makes Fathom easy to adopt is the same mechanism that makes leaving it expensive — every month of adoption deepens an archive that reverts to the vendor when the card declines.
The control that would let you manage that on your own terms is Enterprise-only, and it is not self-serve even there. Retention policies automatically delete recordings after a configured period, and Fathom's own article says setting one for all users on your account is not self-serve yet and asks you to email support to request it. A buyer on any published tier cannot schedule deletion of their own call recordings.
Setting Fathom Up
Sign up free, no card. Bot capture works everywhere; bot-free capture is in beta and Mac-only. Most teams are recording within ten minutes, which is the honest reason this product wins evaluations.
- Ask what "Limited use" is before you standardise on the free tier. It governs advanced summaries and Ask Fathom, and neither the pricing page nor the help centre states it.
- Do the annual arithmetic yourself. Premium and Team save 20% and 21%, not the 25%+ on the toggle.
- Budget two seats, not one, if you want Team — the minimum makes it $38 a month against Premium's $20.
- Decide the exit before the archive is large. Cancelling suspends access to team recordings rather than exporting them.
- If you need scheduled deletion, you need Enterprise and an email to support; it is not configurable on any self-serve plan.
- CRM sync is capped at three users per domain below the top tiers, which is easy to miss when sizing a rollout.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- The free tier is genuinely unlimited for capture — recordings, transcription, storage, downloads and clips, with no time window. Nothing else in this category matches it.
- Both prices are printed on every card, monthly and annual, so the discount claim can be checked without a sales call.
- The help centre documents cancellation behaviour in specific terms rather than leaving it to be discovered when the card fails.
- Seventeen named summary templates, listed publicly with what each produces, including the sales methodologies buyers actually ask for.
- 90-day guarantee on every paid tier, stated on the pricing page rather than in the terms.
- The limit that matters is unpublished. Four features are marked "Limited use" and no number appears on the pricing page or in the help article about them.
- The annual badge overstates on two of three tiers, claiming 25%+ where Premium saves 20.0% and Team 21.1%.
- Two-seat minimum makes the entry team plan $38 a month, nearly double the individual plan it sits next to.
- Cancelling locks the archive rather than returning it. Team recordings stay in Fathom and stop being reachable until the account is reactivated.
- Scheduled deletion is Enterprise-only and not self-serve, so no published-price customer can set a retention period on their own recordings.
- Notes, not coaching, below Business. Scorecards and coaching metrics start at $34 a seat.
Fathom Pricing
Two ladders sold from one page. Individuals get Free and Premium at $20. Teams get Team at $19, Business at $34 and an Enterprise tier routed to sales, both team plans gated behind a two-user minimum. All figures here are the monthly-billing rates, which is the basis this site records.
That minimum inverts the ladder for one person. Team reads cheaper per seat than Premium at $19 against $20, and costs $38 a month to actually buy — so a solo rep who wants global search across their own calls pays nearly double the individual price for the tier that looks like a saving.
The jump that decides most purchases is Team to Business at $19 to $34, a 79% uplift for CRM field sync, Deal View, coaching metrics and AI scorecards. That is the line between a notetaker and a coaching tool, and Fathom prices it accordingly.
Worth knowing that Fathom will give Business free for the length of a competitor's remaining contract, with data migration, if you are switching from Gong or similar. It is on the pricing page rather than in a sales conversation, which is unusually direct.
The Verdict
The best free capture tier in the category, sold by a company that has not published the one limit a free user will actually hit.
- You want unlimited recording and transcription at no cost and can live with standard summaries.
- You are a small sales team that wants notes and search rather than scorecards and deal inspection.
- You are leaving Gong or similar and can use the contract-length switch offer.
- You will be on Business, where the annual discount is real and the coaching features exist.
- You need a written, quantified allowance for AI summaries before you standardise on a tool.
- You are one person wanting Team features, where the two-seat minimum makes it $38 a month.
- You need scheduled deletion of recordings without buying Enterprise and emailing support.
- Your risk review asks what happens to recorded customer calls if billing lapses.
